A Russian footballer has been fined three months’ wages for appearing to call a Wimbledon star a “f***ing w****” on social media.

Vladimir Khubulov, a 20-year-old forward who plays for second-tier side Alania Vladikavkaz, apparently shared a message with the British tennis tournament's 31st-seeded player Daria Kasatkina.

The footballer – who has represented his country at U17 and U18 level – was said to have called the 24-year-old a “f***ing w****” and telling her to “go f*** yourself” following her second-round defeat to Jelena Ostapenko on Thursday.

Kasatkina shared the message on her Instagram story, adding: "This is the kind of gentlemen who play our football.”

It was met with a furious reaction from the sporting world before Vladikavkaz decided to act on Khubulov’s actions.

A statement from the club reads: “FC Alania has always advocated strict adherence to the norms of morality and ethics. We are no stranger to sports solidarity and professional respect for representatives of all sports.

“The situation with our player Vladimir Khubulov will be the subject of internal investigation, the result of which we will report shortly.

“On behalf of the club we apologise to Dalia Kasatkina personally, her family and team members, as well as the fans.”

And a later statement revealed Khubulov would be fined three month’s salary for “causing reputational damage to the club and inappropriate behaviour”.

Khubulov has since taken to his own Instagram page with an apology, having been given the punishment by his club.

The 20-year-old said: “Friends, my recent direct messages to Daria Kasatkina led to unpleasant consequences.

"I know that there is no excuse for my behaviour, and I admit my guilt. First of all, I offer my sincere apologies to Daria, the Alania football club, the fans and everyone whose feelings were touched by my words, written on emotions.

"I regret what I have done and promise not to commit such rash acts in the future. I wish Daria good luck and success in her career."
