Footballer scores hat-trick goal with outrageous sliding shot inside own half

A Romanian footballer completed his hat-trick with an outrageous sliding shot from inside his own half over the weekend.

Doru Popadiuc, who plays as an attacking midfielder for Liga 1 side Chindia Targoviste, scored all three goals as they beat Voluntari 3-0 on Saturday (October 22). Chindia were already cruising to victory thanks to his strikes either side of half-time.

But Popadiuc saw an opportunity to claim the match ball in the 82nd minute when he stole possession outside his own box and sprinted forward with purpose. With opposition goalkeeper Mihai Popa off his line, the 27-year-old went for glory.

Despite slipping as he walloped the ball towards goal, the shot curled perfectly into the back of the net to spark rapturous celebrations.

Popadiuc was mobbed by his stunned team-mates after scoring his first career hat-trick – and doing so in some style too. Last season he only scored four times in 38 league appearances, but he's already on six strikes after 14 games of the 2022/23 campaign.

Explaining his audacious third finish, he revealed to Digi Sport that he'd pre-warned the goalie he was going for it. "I was actually talking to Popa the other day and I told him that once in a while I will still try to score from the half," Popadiuc said.

"Usually, goalkeepers don't expect it and I saw him a little out of sorts. I was also a little tired, I could no longer continue a 60-metre race.

"Then I decided to knock on the door. I slipped at the time of execution. It doesn't matter anymore, the important thing is that it was empty."

Popadiuc's treble secured an important three points for Chindia, who moved within two points of Voluntari and up to 14th in the 16-team Romanian top flight.
