Forgotten Man Utd flop Tuanzebe moves to Napoli on loan after Villa struggle

Forgotten Manchester United defender Axel Tuanzebe has moved to Napoli on loan after struggling at Aston Villa during the first half of the season.

The 24-year-old has joined the Italian giants on a temporary basis until the end of the season and there is no option to make the move permanent included in the deal.

Napoli will pay United a loan fee of £500,000 for Tuanzebe's services, with an additional £500,000 included in the deal via potential bonus payments.

Tuanzebe could make his debut for the club on Sunday against Sampdoria after being named on the bench for the Serie A clash.

United cut short the former England under-21 international's loan stay at Aston Villa at the start of January after he fell out of favour at Villa Park.

The central defender, who was in his third loan stint at Villa, had made a promising start to the season but started to struggle after Dean Smith was replaced by Steve Gerrard in November.

He made a total of 11 appearances for Villa across all competitions after joining in the summer, with eight coming from the start, but played just eight minutes under Gerrard.

Tuanzebe will now hope to kickstart his career in Italy, having joined a Napoli side who are currently third in Serie A and face Barcelona in the Europa League next month.

He also has just 18 months remaining on his contract at Old Trafford and has not played for the club since the Europa League final defeat to Villarreal back in May last year.

Overall, Tuanzebe has made a total of 37 appearances for the Red Devils since being handed his debut by Jose Mourinho as a 19-year-old in January 2017.

Having won just one cap for England at under-21 level, Tuanzebe could also look to push for a call-up to the DR Congo national side, who is also eligible for, ahead of their World Cup qualifying play-off in March.
