Premier League clubs spent money galore over the course of the transfer window – yet despite the obscene amounts of cash thrown at players, there still remain some that are clueless. Record deals such as Jack Grealish’s British record transfer to Manchester City and Romelu Lukaku’s mega-money move to Chelsea were significant, although clubs were hard-pressed to find suitors for their forgotten talents as the clock wound down.

And, with deals being bandied about right up until the deadline, many players in the Premier League did get their move.

Express Sport takes a look at four players whose careers are in limbo after failing to secure a move away.

Ross Barkley

Barkley is a forgotten man in west London – with the midfielder making his last appearance for the club in September 2020 for the Blues.

And with Chelsea signing Saul Niguez, there seems to be even less of a chance for the Liverpool-born midfielder to force his way into the side.

Barkley was subject to a last-minute loan bid by Burnley on Tuesday – but with the playmaker on £100,000 per week, the Clarets couldn’t afford a deal for the out-of-favour midfielder.

Phil Jones

Phil Jones is another forgotten man – having not played for Manchester United since an FA Cup tie in January 2020.

And, with two years left on his contract, it remains to be seen just what will happen to the Preston-born defender’s career.

Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane, Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly are all ahead of the centre-back in the pecking order at Old Trafford – and if he doesn’t move soon, he will have had another two years of his career down the drain.

Anthony Martial

Not so much a forgotten man this time – but after the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo, it remains to be seen where Martial fits into the United setup.

With Ronaldo likely to be ahead of Martial in the striker and left-wing slots, and with Edinson Cavani in there too, the Frenchman will struggle for game time in spearheading United’s attack.

Marcus Rashford is also soon returning from injury, while Jadon Sancho and Mason Greenwood are vying it out for the right-wing slot. Just where does Martial fit in?

Bernardo Silva

A rogue choice – but the arrival of Grealish could spell the end for Silva.

With Raheem Sterling and Grealish being the only natural right-footed players in the side, Bernardo won’t be on the left flank anytime soon.

And with stars Riyad Mahrez and Phil Foden being fellow left-footers and preferred by Pep Guardiola, Silva may be hard-pressed for minutes at the Etihad.
