Gabby Agbonlahor believes Philippe Coutinho owes sacked Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard an apology for his performances since joining the club on a permanent basis.

Coutinho was seen as a shrewd signing by Gerrard when he joined Villa on loan from Barcelona in January and showed his quality in his early displays. The Brazilian scored on his debut against Manchester United and went on to net five goals in 19 appearances last season.

His impact was enough to see Villa make the move permanent in the summer, for a knockdown fee of £17million, and was seen as a key factor in the club’s evolution.

The Brazilian is yet to score or assist in ten Premier League games for Aston Villa this year

However, the 30-year-old has under-performed for Villa so far this season, failing to register a goal or an assist in his 11 games so far this campaign, while he is yet to complete a full 90 minutes.

Coutinho’s form has coincided with Villa’s bad run that has seen them slip to 17th in the table, and following the 3-0 defeat to Fulham last week, part ways with Steven Gerrard.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Agbonlahor believes Coutinho let down the man who signed him and owes Gerrard an apology.

The former Villa striker said: ‘Coutinho was his man and he didn’t perform for him. Coutinho owes Gerrard an apology for me for the way he performed, Gerrard backed him.’

Aston Villa has won just two games all season and find themselves only out of the Premier League’s bottom three on goal difference.

As well as the performances of Coutinho, Agbonlahor also thinks that Gerrard’s tactics were wrong, believing that the side had become too predictable and that it was only a matter of time before the former England captain lost his job.

Coutinho celebrates scoring on his Villa debut against Manchester United but has failed to live up to the same expectations this season

He added: ‘The formation wasn’t working, he wanted the full-backs to have the width but it wasn’t working. He (Gerrard), got rid of all the wingers, and that annoyed fans a bit.

‘We became predictable and boring and with too many balls into the box where the strikers were not going to win the headers.

‘The tactics were poor and it was just a matter of time. Aston Villa want to push into Europe, not be fighting relegation.’

Thomas Tuchel, Mauricio Pochettino and Sean Dyche have been linked as possible replacements for Gerrard, but first-team coach Aaron Danks will take charge of the side for Sunday’s clash with Brentford at Villa Park.
