Gareth Bale makes Wrexham contact as Rob McElhenney teases ‘magical season’

Rob McElhenney has teased Wrexham making Gareth Bale their marquee summer signing after booking their return to the Football League with National League glory.

McElhenney wants to meet up with the five-time Champions League winner, who retired following the 2022 World Cup, over a round of golf.

Bale, 33, is famously a keen golfer and huge fan of the sport – with McElhenney no doubt trying to get him in a good mood before making a proposal over a return to the pitch.

McElhenney, who took over the club alongside fellow actor Ryan Reynolds in early 2021, received a video message from the former Real Madrid man following Wrexham's promotion.

Bale said in a short clip: "Hi Rob, just wanted to congratulate you on the promotion and everything you're doing at Wrexham."

McElhenney then replied: "Hey @GarethBale11 let’s play golf, where I totally won’t spend 4 hours trying to convince you to un-retire for one last magical season."

One excited fan replied with a mocked-up image of the Wales icon in a Wrexham kit: "So you're telling me there's a chance?!"

A second joked: "If he pulls this off I’m renaming my child McElhenney!" A third continued: "You know you want to! Great Team, great owners! Be a part of history."

The signing of Bale would even top the arrival of former England international Ben Foster, who played a vital part in the closing weeks of the season.

One of Bale's fellow Euro 2016 semi-final heroes has already offered his services in the form of Hal Robson-Kanu, who has been without a club since 2021.

Robson-Kanu's tweet tagging Reynolds read: "I'll come out of retirement and come and play for Wrexham next season. I'll also give my salary to the charity of fans choosing…"

He also included the phone emojis in a bid to get a call from the Hollywood star, with Wrexham set to be back in League Two for the first time since 2008.
