Gareth Southgate urges England stars to become first true icons of new Wembley

Gareth Southgate has urged his England stars to create an iconic moment for themselves and the nation by claiming glory at Wembley.

The Three Lions face Denmark in a monumental Euro 2020 semi-final showdown in front of 60,000 fans at the national stadium on Wednesday.

England have not reached the final of a major tournament since winning the 1966 World Cup, losing in the semi-finals at the hands of Croatia last time out.

And Southgate knows this is their big chance to become legends of the game at a stadium which has not had an iconic footballing moment since replacing the old one in 2007.

Southgate, who has a full squad to choose from, wants his stars to create images that will still be talked about in decades to come.

He said: "Wembley has a fantastic history, of course, but those of us old enough to remember the old stadium, a lot of those memories would be from the there, there's no doubt about that.

"The history of the stadium relies on those iconic moments and if we look historically what's been in the past, like the World Cup final, Olympic games and big boxing events, there have been perhaps less of those headline events at the new Wembley.

"This tournament of course is now one of those moments where we've had the chance to have some very high-profile games already and achieve some big moments.

"There's some pictures on the wall as you drive into the dressing rooms, of iconic England moments, but some of them aren't even from finals competitions.

"David Beckham's free-kick against Greece was a qualifier (at Old Trafford), so I think our players have, over the last two tournaments been able to create some really special memories for especially youngsters.

"Bless them. They think it's like this all the time with England. They've not had to live through what we've all lived through.

"But I've not heard the new Wembley have an atmosphere like it did for the Germany game – and I'm sure this one is going to be very special."
