Gary Neville has been slammed by football fans on Twitter after his tweet about Luke Shaw 'aged like milk'.

Neville took to Twitter on Thursday evening as Manchester United looked set to hold Brighton to a goalless draw. And Neville tweeted on the platform: "How well is Luke Shaw doing at Centre Back?"

However, just moments after Neville hit send, Shaw fouled Julio Enciso, after the referee deemed there was the slightest of touches. And shortly after the resulting free-kick, Shaw handled the ball, allowing Alex Mac Allister to convert from the spot – handing the Seagulls three points.

"A tweet that preceded very unfortunate events," one fan joked. As a second added: "Very well. Played great as a GK too Gary!"

"Man of the Match for sure, certainly made the difference in the end, game changer," a third joked. While a fourth tweeted: "Oh this aged well… @GNev2!"

"Gary Neville’s coaching career explained in one tweet," a fifth added. And another joked: "He's 'handled' it very well Gary…"

After the game. Shaw told Sky Sports: "It hurts a lot. Last minute. Last action, really. I got a little nudge but of course, my hand should not be there. Of course, I own up to it and take it on the chin. It cost us the game and it is tough.

"I cannot even explain why my hand is up there. I got a touch but my hand should still not be up there. But I think even before the corner, the free-kick given away just before, that was never a foul.

"I am not looking for excuses but there is no way that should have been a foul and that led to the corner. So maybe that corner should not even have happened. I can't change that. I am not accusing the ref of anything. I own up. A silly mistake!"
