Steven Gerrard SLAMS AC Milan for a ‘frightening’ performance in their 2-0 loss to arch-rivals Inter, as he accuses Stefano Pioli’s side of being ‘so far away from semi-final level in the Champions League’

Steven Gerrard has laid into AC Milan after their 2-0 loss to Inter in the first leg of their Champions League semi final.
Stefano Pioli’s side found themselves 2-0 down inside 11 minutes after early goals from Edin Dzeko and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, and could have gone three down before a penalty was controversially overturned after half an hour.
The Rossoneri did improve as the game went on and avoided conceding any further goals, but it was still a disappointing performance.
‘That performance from AC Milan is so far away from semi-final level at this Champions League, it’s frightening,’ said Gerrard on BT Sport after the game
‘They looked like a gang of players who were out on the pitch. They didn’t play together. The manager must be scratching his head.’

Sandro Tonali has been criticised for his role in Inter’s second goal, which came after just 11 minutes
He was particularly critical of Sandro Tonali’s failure to track Mikhitaryan for the second goal, as he continued: ‘The heart of the team was non-existent. Tonali in this situation extremely lazy, allowing a man to run off him.
‘The two centre-halves, there’s no relationship, there’s no communication. Where’s the communication and how can you allow someone to run right through the heart of the team?
‘For the full 90 minutes the two centre-backs and the two central midfielders for Milan were so passive and weak.’
Peter Crouch agreed, calling the defensive performance from Milan ‘bizarre’ in such an important game.
‘The best thing to come out of tonight’s performance for AC Milan is it’s only 2-0,’ he added.

Fomer Man City striker Edin Dzeko scored the opening goal after just eight minutes
Ex-Arsenal and Manchester United star Henrikh Mkhitaryan scored the Nerrazzuri’s second
‘They had the penalty shout, hit the post, Dzeko missed a good chance. Defensively AC Milan were all over the place. I’ve watched them this season and they’ve been pretty solid defensively.
‘We built them up defensively before the game, they were all over the shop. It could have been far more but credit to Inter, they were on the front foot, they played it like a Champions League semi-final whereas AC Milan didn’t.’
Pioli’s side are left with a tough task ahead of them when they play the second leg in just six days time.
The other semi will conclude next Wednesday as Man City take on Real Madrid in the second leg after drawing the first 1-1 on Tuesday.
