Gini Wijnaldum has reportedly decided to join Paris Saint-Germain after the French club more than doubled Barcelona’s salary offer. The Liverpool midfielder had been expected to join Barca when his Liverpool contract expires at the end of June, but it now appears that PSG have successfully hijacked the deal.

Wijnaldum’s move away from Liverpool has been in the pipeline since January, with Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman personally pursuing his signature.

The 30-year-old will become a free agent on July 1 and has been free to talk to other clubs for the past few months.

Koeman worked with Wijnaldum during his time in charge of the Netherlands and wanted the Liverpool midfielder as part of a summer rebuild for the Spanish side.

The move has been mooted for months, with The Sunday Times reporting in March that Wijnaldum had signed a pre-contract agreement with Barca to become part of president Joan Laporta’s squad overhaul.

Wijnaldum looked set to join fellow Dutch international Memphis Depay at Barca, with Sergio Aguero and Eric Garcia arriving from Manchester City.

Aguero and Garcia have already agreed to join Barca when their Manchester City deals expire next month and Depay is in talks with Barca over joining them when his Lyon contract ends.

It now seems, however, that Wijnaldum won’t be following their lead, with transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano reporting that he has decided to go to PSG instead.

That is because the French club have offered him wages worth more than twice what Barca had tabled.

Wijnaldum is ‘set to accept’ PSG’s proposal of a contract until 2024 because Barcelona have no intention of increasing their offer, which had been agreed in principle two weeks ago.

Bayern Munich had also previously expressed an interest in Wijnaldum but did not pursue his signature as aggressively as PSG.

Romano reports that PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino has been instrumental in getting the deal over the line and personally called Wijnaldum ‘many times’ over the past few days to sell the club’s proposition.

Having been dead-set on Barcelona, Wijnaldum now wants to sign with PSG as soon as possible so that he can focus entirely on the Netherlands’ Euro 2020 campaign.

PSG are working on a way to get his medical done in the Netherlands so that they can announce his arrival as soon as possible.

Wijnaldum has been a key player for Jurgen Klopp since he joined Liverpool from Newcastle back in July 2016 for £25million.

He has helped win the Premier League and Champions League for the Reds and made 51 appearances across the 2020/21 season as a vital cog in the Reds’ midfield.
