Glen Johnson insists Chelsea are ‘the ONLY team’ who can challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title… as he criticises Liverpool’s lack of squad depth
- Former full-back Johnson played for both the Blues and the Reds in his career
- He backed Thomas Tuchel’s side as the only real challengers to the champions
- Johnson claimed Liverpool were a few injuries away from damaging their team
Glen Johnson has insisted Chelsea are the only side who can really challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title, claiming Liverpool’s lack of squad depth could hamper them.
The Blues beat Pep Guardiola’s defending champions three times in six weeks last campaign, in the FA Cup semi-final, Premier League and Champions League final respectively.
And former Chelsea and Liverpool full-back Johnson told BonusCodeBets that adding striker Romelu Lukaku made Thomas Tuchel’s side a ‘real threat’.

Ex-Liverpool full-back Johnson said the Reds’ lack of squad depth could hamper their title bid
He said: ‘Any team that wants to try and take on Manchester City will have to improve from last season. However, if anyone can push Manchester City this year, it will be Chelsea.
‘Thomas Tuchel has done a tremendous job with a fantastic young squad, and they’ve added a world class striker in Romelu Lukaku. Chelsea will be a real threat this season.
‘Liverpool don’t have the squad depth to challenge Manchester City and Chelsea this season. However, they’ve got a strong group of 15 or 16 players that can compete for the league, if they’re able to stay fit.
Johnson, who also played for Chelsea, said signing Romelu Lukaku made them a ‘real threat’
‘Liverpool are two or three injuries away from damaging their team severely, whereas Manchester City’s second team could still make the top six. This kind of strength and depth can make all the difference when it comes to the later months in the season.’
Defending champions Liverpool finished third last season after serious long-term injuries to several key players including Virgil van Dijk and Jordan Henderson scuppered their title bid.
After three league games so far this season, Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea are placed third to fifth with seven points, while Manchester City like seventh with six.
