"Gutless" Man Utd accused of "downing tools" in Tottenham battering

Manchester United have been accused of "downing tools" during their 6-1 drubbing by Tottenham.

The Red Devils were battered out of sight by Jose Mourinho's side at Old Trafford as Heung-min Son and Harry Kane each scored twice for Spurs.

United were already 2-1 down – despite opening the scoring through a second-minute Bruno Fernandes penalty – when Anthony Martial was contentiously sent off for striking Erik Lamela.

They then collapsed to a humiliating defeat at the hands of their former manager, and ex-Blackburn and Celtic striker Chris Sutton believes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men "gave up".

He wrote in the Daily Mail: "Gutless. Absolutely gutless. We cannot pretend the red card did not have an impact but even when you're down to 10 men there are ways to lose a game of football and this wasn't one of them. Manchester United gave up.

"I normally hate accusations of players 'downing tools' — any self-respecting professional shouldn't entertain doing that — but that is just what we saw from United on Sunday.

"Their body language was pathetic from the moment they lost Anthony Martial and they didn't do the basics."

Marcus Rashford was powerless to prevent the humbling, and the England striker issued a heartfelt apology to fans on social media after the game.

He posted: "First and foremost I’m a United fan.

“This is my club. I’m so proud to wear this shirt but there are no excuses, it’s just not good enough and to every single fan around the world that tuned in today, I’m just so sorry.

“You deserve so much better than that. I would have stayed away from social media tonight but you deserve to hear from me during the highs and lows, there is no hiding.

“I feel horrible but I promise you we will do better.”
