Hargreaves reveals the two reasons Van de Beek is being overlooked at Man Utd

Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves admits he was somewhat baffled by the club’s decision to sign Donny van de Beek.

The Dutchman completed a £35million move to Old Trafford from Ajax in August and his arrival was initially met with optimism.

However, the 23-year-old is yet to start a single Premier League game for the Red Devils with his two starts for the club coming in the Carabao Cup.

The likes of Marco van Basten and Daley Blind have criticised Van De Beek’s decision to join the club in the last week and though Hargreaves says the Dutchman will eventually get playing time at Old Trafford, he thinks he’ll always play second fiddle to Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes.

Asked why Van de Beek has had such a slow start at the club, Hargreaves told BT Sport: ‘Because they’ve got two number eights in there with Bruno and Pogba and maybe again it comes down to recruitment.

‘When City need something, they go get something that they don’t have and I think United had those two players there.

‘I’m sure he’s going to get a run of games but when you spend £40m on a player you’d like to think he’d play.

‘But I think Ole will find a place when it’s available.’

United host Red Bull Leipzig at Old Trafford on Wednesday and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is expected to shuffle his pack, meaning an opportunity for Van de Beek could be on the cards.

Anthony Martial is set to start as he’s unavailable for Sunday’s clash against Arsenal, while Paul Pogba could come in after starting the last three matches on the bench.

Juan Mata, Daniel James and Victor Lindelof could sit the game out.
