Former AC Milan striker Hernan Crespo is still aching from his side’s 2005 Champions League final loss to Liverpool.

The Argentine has asked Stefano Pioli’s side to ‘get revenge’ for his heartbreak when the two teams meet at Anfield on September 15.

The Reds famously battled back from 3-0 down at half-time to seal their comeback victory hailed as the Miracle of Istanbul.

Captain Paolo Maldini gave Milan an early lead in the first minute before Crespo added another two to hand Carlo Ancelotti’s side a seemingly unassailable lead heading into the break.

However, Steven Gerrard inspired Liverpool to an uplifting second half display as he, Vladimir Smicer and Xabi Alonso levelled in a seven-minute spell, before the Reds ultimately pulled off a sensational penalty shootout victory.

The events of Istanbul clearly still haunt the former striker and he now hopes Milan can beat Liverpool in the group stages of this year’s Champions League campaign.

‘It’s still an open wound for me,’ the 46-year-old told told La Gazzetta dello Sport via the Liverpool Echo.

‘Liverpool-Milan is the first game Champions League game this season, and you already know what it means to me.

‘I had scored a brace in the first half, I have never forgotten that night and even though Milan already beat Liverpool in the 2007 final, I’m asking Pioli’s men to beat them at Anfield, get the revenge for me and show who Milan are.’

AC Milan have already enacted revenge for their 2005 defeat. The Rossoneri won the coveted European crown for their seventh time in 2007 when they sealed a 2-1 victory against Liverpool.
