Houssem Aouar to Arsenal: Three Gunners key to transfer as Edu holds talks with Lyon

Arsenal are determined to sign Houssem Aouar from Lyon with the French club looking to sell but Mikel Arteta may need to offload players first this week. The Gunners have until next Monday to get a deal over the line before the transfer deadline.

Arsenal hope to sign either Aouar or Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey before then.

The former is more likely with Lyon keen to cash-in on the 22-year-old and talks ongoing with Edu.

The situation to bring Partey to the Emirates is far more complicated with Atletico insisting the Gunners would have to pay his €50million release clause in order for him to leave.

On top of that, the La Liga side would want it as a lump sum and agent fees are a problem.

The Athletic claim that for either deal to be done three players may have to be sold by Arteta.

Lucas Torreira, Matteo Guendouzi and Sokratis are all said to be on their way out of the Emirates.

Roma are also said to have showed interest in Alexandre Lacazette but were not prepared to pay anywhere near the asking price Arsenal wanted.

The reports claim Arsenal do have other options if they are unable to sign Aouar and Partey.

Arteta is looking to strengthen his side in order to close the gap on the likes of Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United this season.

Speaking to Canal+ last night, Aouar claimed he would not discuss his future out of respect for Lyon.

He said: “I will give you an interview after the match but I will not talk about my future”

Aouar was then pushed for an answer on whether he would be keen to join Arsenal.

The 22-year-old refused to rule out a move to the Emirates Stadium: “There are contact with clubs, I don’t know yet. We’ll see what happens in the future.”

Arteta has been aware of Aouar’s quality for some time, ever since his days as Manchester City assistant boss.

Him and Pep Guardiola were particularly impressed with the France ace after he ran the show for Lyon in a 2-2 draw with City in November 2018.

He was also excellent for Lyon as they upset the odds to dump Juventus and City out of the Champions League last month.
