Thomas Frank was refusing to panic after his star forward Ivan Toney was stretchered off in the dying moments of Brentford’s Premier League clash with West Ham on Friday night.

The English striker went down in considerable pain after a seemingly innocuous challenge for the ball with Bees defender Ben Mee, and was unable to continue after being escorted off the field.

Brentford sealed a comfortable 2-0 win over the Hammers at the London Stadium, with both sides paying their respects to the late great Brazilian legend Pele prior to kick-off.

But despite the forward’s uncharacteristic insistence that he needed treatment, Danish boss Frank remained calm in the face of potentially losing his biggest goal threat to injury.

‘I don’t know too much about it,’ Frank told talkSPORT. ‘It’s unusual Ivan wanted to be subbed off, he’s very resilient and can take a lot of pain.

‘Of course I worry a bit but also you know with these things we need to assess it for the next couple of days and see how it goes.

‘There’s a chance it’s nothing serious but we don’t know.’

The English striker had been his usual influential self on Friday night, scoring Brentford’s first goal from inside the box, before assisting Josh Dasilva’s strike just before half-time.

Only Erling Haaland and Harry Kane – considered two of Europe’s leading marksmen – have scored more goals than the 26-year-old in the Premier League this season.

Toney scored his 12th goal of the season after only 18 minutes before assisting Josh Dasilve

However his form could be about to take a slight hit if his injury should prove to be as serious as it appeared at the London Stadium.

It is yet to be seen how serious the injury is, or whether he is in for a prolonged period on the sidelines, but he was replaced for recently-returned defender Pontus Jansson to close out the game.

Brentford are next in action against Liverpool at the Gtech Community Stadium on Monday January 2, with Toney surely a doubt to feature against Jurgen Klopp’s rejuvenated Reds.
