James Tarkowski is expected to complete a move to Everton in the next few days, pending the outcome of a medical.

The 29-year-old is out of contract at Burnley at the end of this month and a departure from Turf Moor has been likely for some time.

Sportsmail reported last month that Everton were confident of agreeing a deal for Tarkowski, having fought off competition from Aston Villa and Fulham.

The defender has spent six and a half years at Burnley and helped them win promotion to the Premier League in 2016. He has since made 194 appearances in the top-flight but could not prevent the Clarets getting relegated last season.

Tarkowski also has two England caps to his name – both picked up in 2018 – and he has not given up hope of getting back in to Gareth Southgate’s squad.

Frank Lampard has been keen to bolster Everton’s defence that shipped 66 goals in 38 league games last season.

Yerry Mina missed a total of five months of the campaign and is about to enter the final 12 months of his contract at Goodison Park.

Tarkowski is one of several players expected to leave Burnley this summer as the club attempt to manage the financial hit that relegation to the Championship has brought.

However, one man who will not be departing is Ashley Barnes. The forward, 32, has signed a one-year extension to stay at Turf Moor until 2023.
