Jamie Carragher has cheeky solution to solve Liverpool defensive crisis

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has joked that he has “half a chance” of playing for Jurgen Klopp’s side this season as their injury problems at the back worsen. Virgil van Dijk is set to miss a major chunk of the season with an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Joel Matip has also been out of action since the Merseyside derby and defensive midfielder Fabinho, who had been filling in at centre back, was forced off with a hamstring problem in Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Midtjylland in the Champions League.

Asked about his side’s defensive problems in his post-match press conference, Klopp said: “I don’t know [if Matip will be fit to play against West Ham]. We have to see.

“How it is, if it would be only one game that we play – if it’s the last game of the season – then I think we could make maybe one or the other fit for one game.

“But then we play three days later again, and we need players again.

“The players who are now injured, we cannot use them on the first day of being fit again, or not injured anymore.

“They need a proper build-up for the rest of the season, that’s what we try.

“And it’s this juggle all the time between the fit players, how much can they play, and when can we use the others again.

“We are really interested in that fact, so you can imagine we try everything to make everybody fit as quick as possible.”

Now, Carragher has joked that he could come out of retirement and fill in at the back.

When asked if he would be willing to do so, Carragher told CBS Sports: “Well, the way it’s looking, I mean it could be half a chance.

“At this moment, there is no-one on TV who talks a better game than me.”

It comes after Klopp hit out at Carragher for claiming Liverpool should have replaced Dejan Lovren this summer.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Carragher said: “Dejan Lovren went and they didn’t replace him so they only have three centre-backs and one of those, Joel Matip, is always injured.

“There are question marks now about Joe Gomez. So there is no doubt that Liverpool had to go big in the transfer market.”

In response, Klopp said: “We went into the season with three centre-backs plus Fabinho as cover and some youngsters. It’s hard to have four world-class centre-halves.

“If anyone wants to tell us we made a mistake – I think Carragher mentioned already – there are a few reasons why they don’t do this job.”
