Jamie Carragher tells Arsenal what their next two signings have to be

Jamie Carragher has highlighted what Arsenal need to do in order to reach the "next level".

Mikel Arteta's side have stunned the Premier League this season after coming back from three defeats in their opening three matches to becoming serious top-four candidates. Yet the Gunners are some way off challenging for the league title, with Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea still the stronger sides.

Sky Sports pundit Carragher believes the north Londoners have come a long way but are at a crucial point where they need to sign two key players to continue their upward trajectory. And the former Liverpool defender claimed they need to replicate the Reds' signings of goalkeeper Alisson and defender Virgil van Dijk in 2018.

Carragher said: "Arsenal need to get fourth and if we liken it to what [Jurgen] Klopp did at Liverpool, Arsenal are at the stage where they haven't got a [Cristiano] Ronaldo, they haven’t got a [Harry] Kane.

"Their next two or three signings have to be an Alisson or a Van Dijk. To take them from sort of challenging for the top four to making that jump where you're competing with City, Liverpool and Chelsea."

Liverpool went from being a good side under Klopp to winning the Champions League after signing the two aforementioned stars. Carragher's comments suggest the Gunners do not yet have any players of world class ability, despite the brilliance of Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard and Aaron Ramsdale this season.

The Liverpool legend went on to explain how Arsenal specifically need to improve up-front, saying: "They need a really top centre-forward who can really take them up a level."

Arteta is expected to add a top striker in the summer transfer window, having failed to sign his key target Dusan Vlahovic in January. The Gunners are currently threadbare in the forward position, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang leaving in January and Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah's contracts running out at the end of the season.

Lacazette at 30 no longer has the legs required for a side challenging for a title and his lack of goals has left a lot to be desired at the Emirates. Arsenal's current top goal-scorers this season are 20-year-old Saka and 21-year-old Emile Smith Rowe, both of whom have 10 goals.
