Joelinton red-carded as Newcastle vs Benfica chaos ensues with benches scrapping

Joelinton was sent off in Newcastle's pre-season friendly against Benfica which sparked a mass brawl between the benches.

The Magpies were taking on the Portuguese side in their annual Eusebio Cup invitational match on Tuesday (July 26) when the Brazilian was given a second yellow card with a little under 10 minutes to go.

The ensuing scenes were anything but friendly, as the nature of Joelinton's tackle had the benches confronting each other on the sidelines. The referee was forced to intervene while one Benfica fan even tried to get involved as they ran down the stand towards the dugouts.

The hosts went on to score a late goal and win 3-2, but both sides put their disagreements to one side and formed guards of honour for each other for the medal presentations.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe felt the red card was uncalled for. He said: "I'm disappointed, to be honest. For me, in pre-season friendlies, the last thing I want to see is a red card for either team unless there is a tackle that is really out of the spirit of the game. I don't think Joelinton's tackles were.

"The second one was late and he acknowledged that and stayed to try and look after the lad. It spoiled the last 10-15 minutes but it was a good test for us as well.

"We weren't quite good enough to see the game out, which is disappointing from our perspective."

Joelinton is now suspended for Newcastle's next friendly against Atalanta at St James' Park on Friday (July 29), but will be available to face Atheltic Club the following day. He was also booked for a late challenge in their first pre-season outing against 1860 Munich.
