Phil Jones is recalled to Manchester United’s Champions League squad for knockout stages – after defender was omitted from group-stage selection… in what could be his first appearance in the competition in THREE YEARS

Phil Jones could feature in his first Champions League match since 2019 after being included in Manchester United’s squad for the knockout stages.
The centre back has been added to the Red Devils’ 25-man squad for the business end of the competition, which resumes with the last 16 beginning next week. United travel to Atletico Madrid for the first leg of their tie on February 23.
Jones has endured an injury-plagued few years at Old Trafford and has only made two appearances for the club all season – a 1-0 home defeat by Wolves in the Premier League on January and their FA Cup fourth-round exit at home to Middlesbrough on Friday night.

However, his name has been submitted to UEFA as part of United’s A-list for the Champions League – in what represents their last chance at winning silverware this season.
Jones’ inclusion stems from the fact that Anthony Martial, Donny van de Beek and Amad Diallo all left Old Trafford on loan last month. The aforementioned trio had all played in the group stages.
Their departures has freed up space in the squad with interim manager Ralf Rangnick choosing Jones and fourth-choice goalkeeper Lee Grant to take their spots. UEFA rules allow up to three changes to be made per squad.
At present it remains unlikely that Jones will feature over the two legs against Atletico, with the 29-year-old behind Raphael Varane, Victor Lindelof, Harry Maguire and Eric Bailly in the centre-back pecking order.
His last appearance in the competition came in their quarter-final 3-0 second-leg loss at Barcelona on April 16, 2019.
