Jose Mourinho shares his opinion of Man Utd signing Edinson Cavani

Jose Mourinho has backed “one of the top strikers in the world” Edinson Cavani to help Manchester United bounce back from their Tottenham thrashing.

The Spurs boss inflicted his former employer’s worst home defeat since 2011, after winning 6-1 at Old Trafford.

The hosts opened the scoring after less than two minutes, but by the seventh minute, Spurs were leading thanks to goals from Tanguy Ndomeble and Heung-min Son.

Anthony Martial was then sent off for United, before Mourinho’s men ran riot, scoring four more times on a memorable afternoon.

The heavy defeat piled more pressure on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with the clamour to bring in players before the deadline increasing.

Cavani and Alex Telles are both expected to arrive before the window closes, as United hope to turn their early-season form around.

Mourinho was sacked by United back in 2018 and he admitted he knows how his successor is feeling.

"I have sympathy for Ole because of the result. I don't remember that I lost by [conceding] six but I lost by five and I lost by four, I know how it hurt,” he said, following the win.

"I know it's very, very important the winning manager shows sympathy. Of course, I want to win by seven, not by six, don't get me wrong. But sympathy in our behaviour. Today was him, tomorrow it's me.”

However, Mourinho is backing the imminent arrival of Cavani to provide United an immediate boost.

He added: "I can imagine tonight he is not going to sleep very, very well, but this is the hard life for us. But when I look to his team there was an evolution, it's not like he arrives here and the team is improving. They have good players, bought young players. If it's true that Cavani is coming, Cavani is one of the top strikers in the world.

"And Manchester United is Manchester United. It's not this defeat that is going to destroy them, I can imagine they'll react like Manchester United always react.”
