Jose Mourinho shut down a reporter’s claim that Tottenham have a “chance of progressing” in the Carabao Cup ahead of taking on Chelsea.

The north London side will take on their boss’ former side in their round-of-16 clash, two days after drawing 1-1 with Newcastle.

While the Blues are looking to recover from their dramatic 3-3 draw against promoted side West Brom.

Frank Lampard’s side have only won two of their last four games, despite spending nearly £200m on players throughout the summer.

And it has seen some doubt whether the Stamford Bridge side will come out on top in the cup match.

But the Tottenham boss made it brutally clear that he did not agree with this statement in his latest press conference.

In the clip, a reporter says that Mourinho’s side have a “real chance of progressing” in the competition.

But the manager quickly bites back, saying: “You are joking or are you serious?”

After an awkward silence, the report confirms they are not serious in their questioning before asking for an explanation.

And Mourinho simply replies: “Because Chelsea played Saturday.

“They had Sunday and Monday, then they play Tuesday, then play again on the weekend.

“If the manager decides not to rotate, he can perfectly play with the players that he wants.

“We played on Sunday, we’re playing on Tuesday, we’re playing on Thursday and then play on Sunday again.

“More will come.”

But Lampard, who tasted victory twice against Mourinho’s Spurs side last season, has not been impressed with the manager’s complaints.

He said: “Yeah, I mean, I know that, and I know Jose it’s a busy time for Tottenham because of the Europa League. It’s a busy time for us all. They had a free mid-week last week, we didn’t.

“I know they have a busy week this week. But when I analyse Tottenham and know the squad they have, and analyse what might be a team that maybe didn’t play 90 minutes pretty much yesterday.

“They have a fantastic squad, so I feel that any squad Jose will put out can be very strong.

“I think we all know that the Carabao Cup, for teams like ourselves and Tottenham – who are challenging for the top four and Champions League, like we are – then the Carabao Cup does have its place and we certainly respect it and every tournament we go in we’ll try and win.”
