Jose Mourinho is reportedly set to hand a second chance to Sergio Romero after the goalkeeper was released by Manchester United. Romero made just seven Premier League appearances for the Red Devils across a six-year stay in Manchester, as he mainly acted as David De Gea’s understudy.
But the emergence of Dean Henderson from United’s academy squeezed the Argentine out of that back-up role.
He even slipped behind veteran keeper Lee Grant in the pecking order after Henderson’s promotion to the first-team.
It was a miserable final few months at Old Trafford for the 34-year-old, who was totally frozen out by manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
He failed to make an appearance for United in any competitive competition in the season just gone, with his last outing for the Red Devils coming in June 2020.

It appears that Solskjaer had such little use for the former Argentina number one that he was allowed to stay in his home country for a significant part of the final months of his contract.
The Mirror state that he has instead spent the last six months in Buenos Aires after being told by Solskjaer that he was surplus to requirements.
But it seems that despite his frustrating time in Manchester, Romero could be handed a second this summer.
That is because the Mirror also claim that Mourinho is set to offer a contract to the goalkeeper to move to Roma.

The Portuguese was appointed Roma manager at the start of May after being sacked as Tottenham boss in April.
Mourinho is now attempting to build a squad that can return Roma to the top of Serie A, with the club having missed out on European football this season.
Roma require a new goalkeeper after seeing veteran Antonio Mirante leave the club after a three-year stay in the Italian capital.
They want an experienced player between the sticks to challenge Pau Lopez for the number one shirt.
It appears that the man he has set his sights on to fill that role is Romero, after his release by United this week.
Romero enjoyed a good relationship with Mourinho during the Portuguese’s time in the Old Trafford dugout, being selected to star in the 2017 Europa League final.
It is stated that the goalkeeper is tempted by the opportunity to link up with Mourinho again, having spent four years playing in Serie A before moving to United.
But Roma are facing competition for Romero’s signature, with the keeper also having offers from Argentine clubs Boca Juniors and Racing Club.
