Martin Keown hits out at £350,000-a-week exile star Mesut Ozil for ‘undermining Arsenal with his tweets’… and insists playmaker has been ‘conning’ Gunners fans for years
- Arsenal legend Martin Keown has accused Mesut Ozil of undermining the club
- He also said the German is ‘conning the fans’ amid his exit this month of summer
- Keown claimed the playmaker could have become a legend at the Emirates
- Fenerbache and DC United are among clubs looking to sign the Gunners outcast
Arsenal legend Martin Keown has accused Mesut Ozil of ‘undermining’ the club and ‘conning’ the fans in an emotional rant about the midfielder’s contribution over the past few seasons.
Ozil’s time at the Emirates is set to come to an end either this month or in the summer, after a turbulent seven-year stay in north London.
Once the most exciting player at the club and a favourite among the fanbase, the German has since become an outcast in recent seasons and has not been selected in Mikel Arteta’s competition squads this campaign.

His lack of effort on the pitch has become a frequent talking point amid his absence from the team as he continues to pick up his £350,000-per-week wages.
And Keown believes the playmaker could have written his name in history at the club but has rather tarnished his reputation and deserves his critics.
‘It hurts me that a player of that talent can’t get on the football pitch, it’s a crying shame,’ Keown told talkSPORT.
‘For me, he doesn’t go down as a legend, because he doesn’t match the energy and determination of legends that I’ve seen at that football club.
‘If he had [Kieran] Tierney’s determination, coupled with that ability, he might’ve gone down as the best player ever to play for Arsenal.

‘He’s become calculated in the way that he’s undermining the club with tweets, and I think it’s now time to go.’
The Gunners are in discussions with Ozil over buying out of his contract for £7.2million, with both parties hoping he will move on before this summer.
Turkish giants Fenerbahce and a number of MLS clubs – including DC United – are interested in signing Ozil, who joined Arsenal from Real Madrid in a deal worth £42.5m in 2013.
However, former Gunners defender Keown sent out a warning to any potential suitors for the German, slating his commitment to the club.
Arsenal have reportedly entered talks with Mesut Ozil over ending his £350k-per-week deal
However, the Gunners midfielder is looking to be paid in full before he moves on this January
‘Two-and-a-half years ago when Atletico Madrid knocked Arsenal out of the Europa League, I watched very closely and it felt like he [Ozil] was conning the fans.
‘He wasn’t giving everything for the shirt; I accused him of crocodile tears, it felt like something was very wrong. That was two-and-a-half years ago, and my opinion hasn’t changed.
‘There was a session of illnesses, a mystery back injury, away games he wasn’t available.
‘Is there a problem with the player? Is he conning us? Eventually he’ll write a book and we’ll get to know the whole story.
‘But if you’ve got that much talent and you’re not getting picked, you can’t be giving 100 per cent, and that was happening two-and-a-half years ago.’
