Kevin De Bruyne ended up with his model wife and thriving young family thanks to a confident pal that sent a Twitter DM on his behalf during his time on loan from Chelsea to Werder Bremen.

The 31-year-old has been in a relationship with model Michele Lacroix since back in 2014 with the pair tying the knot in 2017 and sharing three children together who live in Manchester.

The Manchester City and Belgium icon settled down with Michele, who has now taken his surname, despite being too nervous to message her after she liked a tweet he had sent during his early career.

"It started with a tweet," De Bruyne told The Players' Tribune in 2019. "I only had a few thousand followers at the time, because I was still on loan at Werder Bremen. So I tweeted something about a match or whatever, and this pretty girl favourited it.

"I was single at the time, and my friend noticed it. So he said, 'She looks like a nice girl, no? You should send her a message'."

With his friend then grabbing his phone and sending a message with his permission, De Bruyne ended up getting to know his future wife over texts before they became a couple and started a family.

With Mason Milian De Bruyne born in 2016, he was joined by siblings Rome De Bruyne in 2018 and Suri De Bruyne in 2020.

De Bruyne has often pledged his commitment to City down the years having picked up four Premier League titles in the last five seasons – and admits that he now feels old as the only player remaining from Pep Guardiola's first squad.

He said this month: "That’s how it goes sometimes but I’ve been at the club seven years now, Pep has been here six. It’s a long time in football these days.

"But I’m still very happy with what I’m doing here and hopefully the club is happy with me. Everything has changed so much since Pep came but it was funny to see there was just me left."
