Kieron Dyer ‘was as yellow as Bart Simpson’ – miracle transplant saved his life
Former England international Kieron Dyer has explained how he "was as yellow as Bart Simpson" before he received a life-changing liver transplant.
The 44-year-old, who turned out for Newcastle United, Ipswich Town and West Ham United amongst others, had been battling a rare disease in the form of primary sclerosing cholangitis, a condition which causes serious damage to ones liver.
Having waited previously to deal with the false hope of getting a transplant liver from a donor, Dyer was operated on by surgeons back in September, with the procedure lasting nine hours. He was discharged from hospital in October, and has been recovering at home ever since.

And speaking to the Mail just weeks after his life saving liver transplant, Dyer, who says he "was a yellow as Bart Simpson" prior to his operation, has explained how there are days were he simply just cries in joy at being alive.
"The fact that someone else died so that I might live is something I still can’t process," Dyer said. "I haven’t spoken about it until now because it is such an overwhelming thought. Maybe 99% of the population only gets one chance of life and I have been given two.

The new liver has also given Dyer a new perspective on life too. And the ex-England midfielder who made 33 appearances for the Three Lions has vowed never to waste a single day following his treatment.

"How do you pay it back? The first thing is to make sure I never jeopardise my liver," added Dyer, who also starred on ITV's 'I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here' back in 2015.
"I wasn’t an alcoholic so there will be a time where I could drink alcohol if I wanted to, in moderation, but I will never do that. I will never jeopardise my liver. I have never taken drugs and I will stay that way. I will try and live every day to the fullest, try not to waste a single day. I have got a lot more positive outlook on life now. It’s a shame that it took someone else’s tragedy for me to be able to see it."
