Lampard, Tisdale and Cochrane favourites for England Under 21 job

Frank Lampard, Paul Tisdale and Justin Cochrane favourites for England Under 21 job after Euro’s disaster for Aidy Boothroyd’s talented-packed side

  • Aidy Boothroyd looks set to leave the England Under 21 post this summer
  • His contract is running down and the manager oversaw a disaster at the Euro’s
  • A squad including Eberechi Eze and Curtis Jones crashed-out in the group stage
  • Frank Lampard, Paul Tisdale and Justin Cochrane have emerged as candidates

Paul Tisdale, Frank Lampard and Justin Cochrane will be among the front-runners for the England Under 21 job — though the FA is expecting scores of applications after Aidy Boothroyd’s failure to qualify for the latter stages of the European Championships with a richly talented generation of players.

Boothroyd, who has been in charge since 2016, is out of contract this summer and is expected to leave after two defeats and one victory saw England eliminated at the group stages last week, opening the way to a fresh approach.

The new appointment will be the first significant choice of new FA technical director John McDermott.

The young Lions were knocked out in the group stages of the Euro’s with a talented squad

Former Chelsea boss Frank Lampard would be a high-profile appointment for the U21 job

The former Tottenham academy chief has worked closely with Tisdale, who was sacked by Bristol Rovers in January, when at Tottenham.

He was interviewed for the Under 21 post in 2013 and is admired for his work with young players such as Chelsea’s Ethan Ampadu, Swansea’s Matt Grimes and recent England debutant Ollie Watkins.

Tisdale took an advisory role last week at Colchester United.

Paul Tisdale is also among the front-runners and could be favourite with his FA connections

Lampard, if he wants to step away from club management, would be the most high-profile choice and has experience of major tournaments with England as a player, which is seen as a significant advantage.

Cochrane, who worked with the likes of Japhet Tanganga and Oliver Skipp in the age-group team at Spurs, came in as England Under 15 coach in 2018 and now coaches England Under 17s.
