Lampard under mounting pressure over Man Utd game, Cech call and transfers

Chelsea ’s new-look team needs to deliver Frank Lampard a positive result and performance today at Old Trafford.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United host the Blues in a crunch Premier League showdown.

And Chelsea know they will be leapfrogged by the Red Devils if they lose in the 5.30pm kick-off behind closed doors.

Lampard’s side drew 3-3 against Southampton at Stamford Bridge last weekend before being held to a goalless draw by Sevilla in their Champions League group stage opener in midweek.

Whole Chelsea had the positive of new goalkeeper Edouard Mendy keeping a clean sheet, Lampard’s expensive attack blanking did him no favours.

Timo Werner is up and running for Chelsea after he fired two past the Saints last Saturday.

But he, Kai Havertz, Thiago Silva and Co need to be on their best form today to send a message to their rivals.

The bold call to include previously retired goalkeeper Petr Cech to his Premier League squad this week showed Lampard is worried about Kepa Arrizabalaga if Mendy is absent.

The pressure is on Lampard with Chelsea having won two of their opening five top-flight games.

Arsenal legend and Premier League pundit Paul Merson warns the Blues boss needs a boost in Manchester this evening.

In his Daily Star Sport column , he wrote: “Petr Cech’s chances of actually playing again for Chelsea are absolutely minimal even though he’s been named in their Premier League squad.

“But if I’m an 18-year-old goalkeeper trying to make my way at the club, I’d be wondering what chance I’ve got if they can bring Cech out of retirement.

“Chelsea have done really well bringing through their young players under Frank Lampard the last couple of years. They should keep doing it.

“I think this is a big match for Frank now against Manchester United. A few days ago you were thinking this was a big week for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

“You were wondering whether he’d survive it. But three late goals at Newcastle and a great performance against PSG and everything has changed.

“Now, all of a sudden the pressure is on Lampard. His side drew 3-3 with Southampton and then couldn’t score against Sevilla.

“Chelsea have already lost big games this season. If he loses this game there will be serious questions asked.

“I don’t think he’s going to get loads of time this season because of all the money they’ve spent, and he needs to start getting it right.”

Chelsea spent over £200m this summer, meaning Lampard is against the clock to get his team ticking on the pitch.
