England star Lauren James has been suspended for two games following her red card against Nigeria.

She'll miss the quarter-final against Colombia on Saturday (August 12) as well as their final four clash should Sarina Wiegman's side progress past the South Americans.

It does, however, mean she'd return if they reached the Women's World Cup final. James was given her marching orders towards the end of the second half of the Lionesses' last 16 clash earlier this week.

The 21-year-old stood on the back of Nigeria's Michelle Alozie after they'd both competed for possession. She was initially shown a yellow card by Honduran referee Melissa Borjas.

But after a VAR review the booking was upgraded to a straight red. The game went to penalties after neither side could find a breakthrough, with England triumphing 4-2 after Chloe Kelly rifled in the winning spot kick.

James broke her silence on Wednesday after Alozie had tweeted: "Abeg, rest. We are playing on the world’s stage. This game is one of passion, insurmountable emotions, and moments. All respect for Lauren James."

She wrote: "All my love and respect to you. I am sorry for what happened. Also, for our England fans and my team-mates, playing with and for you is my greatest honour and I promise to learn from my experience."
