Leeds face painful loss on Rodrigo as Real Madrid ‘weigh up bargain transfer’

Sam Allardyce urges ‘police to do a lot more’ about social media abuse

Leeds United could be set for a kick in the teeth after their Premier League relegation, with star striker Rodrigo Moreno reportedly attracting interest from Real Madrid. The prospective fee received for waving goodbye to the Spaniard would hardly soften the blow, either, as Los Blancos eye up a bargain transfer deal to offset Karim Benzema’s departure.

Real are in the market for at least one new forward with club legend Benzema now bedding in at Al-Ittihad. Tottenham striker Harry Kane is believed to be the top choice for Carlo Ancelotti, but the Spanish giants are also linked with a host of budget options.

Rodrigo falls into that category as he only has one year remaining on his Leeds contract. And the Whites have little negotiating power ahead of the summer transfer window as the 32-year-old looks destined for a route out of the Championship.

Having shelled out £27million to sign the frontman from Valencia back in 2020, COPE claim that Leeds now face the prospect of losing him for the meagre sum of just £3m.

Receiving a pittance for the player who scored 13 Premier League goals in 2022/23 – almost three times as much as any other Leeds player – would come as a bitter blow for all those affiliated with the Yorkshire club.

Rodrigo made a slow start to life at Elland Road but came alive last campaign, even though his impressive form proved insufficient to keep Leeds in the top flight as they were sent tumbling down to the second tier on the final day.

The Spanish international certainly won’t be the only player to flee this summer. Wilfried Gnonto reportedly has admirers at Juventus while the American duo of Tyler Adams and Brenden Aaronson are seemingly destined for new challenges elsewhere.

Although the landscape is constantly changing; Daniel Farke, Carlos Corberan and Steven Gerrard are currently the three leading managerial candidates to try and propel Leeds to Championship glory next term after Sam Allardyce’s interim tenure lasted just four matches.

Rangers legend Ally McCoist believes that a move to Elland Road would not suit Gerrard, instead urging him to rebuild his reputation overseas.

“I’ve said it about Frank [Lampard too], I would like to see Steven and Frank go abroad, broaden their coaching and managerial horizons,” he told talkSPORT. “[The Championship] is a completely different dynamic to the top flight. I just think they’re very young, I’d like to see them go abroad.”
