Lineker outed as Shakespeare buff after pal Alastair Campbell grasses him up

It's The Taming Of The Shrewsbury Town – ex-England footballer Gary Lineker is a secret Shakespeare buff.

The Match of the Day host, 60, spilled the beans to former Number 10 spin doctor Alastair Campbell, who detailed a meeting they had in a 2014 entry in his newly published diaries.

Lineker admitted he was a fan of the Bard in a wide ranging chat with the former Labour man.

Campbell, said: “He was good on alcohol in sport. Just don’t have it. Also strong on all the betting advertising and sponsorship in sport. ‘Crisps are fine. They do no harm at all.’

“Said his dream panel of pundits, dead or alive, would be Andy Gray, Alan Hansen, Gary Neville. “And he’s Into Shakespeare!”

He did not elaborate but Lineker has hinted to fans of his love of Shakespeare in the past when he quoted the Bard in a Tweet.

When talking about rumours that manager Craig Shakespeare was about to take over at Leicester FC, he enlightened followers with a quote from Hamlet.

He tweeted: “Strong rumours that Shakespeare will be given the @LCFC job until the end of the season. ‘We know what we are, but know not what we may be.’
