Lionel Messi enrages PSG with "illogical" contract clause as poor run continues

Lionel Messi’s decision to invoke a reported clause placed in his Paris Saint-Germain contract has been branded “illogical” by the French club’s hierarchy.

Messi arrived in the French capital this summer on a free transfer from boyhood club Barcelona and reportedly included a clause in his deal which allows him to prioritise playing in international matches for Argentina.

The 34-year-old’s PSG career so far has been hugely underwhelming, having only made five Ligue 1 appearances and scored no goals as a result of injuries.

And even in spite of missing the previous two matches for the club due to a knee injury, the six-time Ballon d’Or winner has decided to join Argentina for the November international break, leaving PSG director Leonardo fuming.

Speaking to Le Parisien, Leonardo said: “We do not agree to let a player go by selection who, for us, is not in physical condition or who is in the rehabilitation phase.

“It is not logical, and these types of situations deserve a real agreement with FIFA.”

Meanwhile, talking prior to his side’s 3-2 win over Bordeaux on Saturday, PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino commented: “Tomorrow he won't be available to play for the team. We will see if he can travel to play for his country.

“We hope he can go and play for his country and then return to us fit.”

Messi is understood to have since taken a 13-hour long trip to his home country on Sunday evening.

The Argentine won his long-awaited first trophy with his nation in the summer after a 1-0 victory over rivals Brazil in the Copa America final.

He is joined by PSG teammate Leandro Paredes, with the duo hoping to win both of their difficult World Cup qualifiers against Uruguay and Brazil.
