Liverpool beat Blackburn 6-0 as Jurgen Klopp offers glimpse into future of two stars

Liverpool were back in action on Thursday as Lancashire neighbours Blackburn Rovers made the visit to Anfield for a friendly match behind closed doors. Jurgen Klopp will be keen for his players to get some extra minutes in their legs ahead of the Premier League’s return next week.

The Reds travel to Everton on June 21 and can be crowned champions should Arsenal beat Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium next Wednesday.

The prospect of winning the title at Goodison Park will spur on the Liverpool players, who could still break several records this season.

Klopp’s side have already played an inter-squad friendly at Anfield last week, as Sadio Mane and Naby Keita found the net.

The Guinea midfielder is looking to finally make his mark at the club following another underwhelming campaign since his 2017 £53million switch from RB Leipzig.

Yet the good news for Liverpool supporters is that Keita appears to have hit the ground running since the Reds were given the green-light to return.

Twitter user Mark Hughes had inside information on the clash at Anfield and he claimed the Reds were 3-0 to the good at half-time, with Keita on target.

The other goals were scored by Sadio Mane and Takumi Minamino, another player who has taken his time to adjust to life at Anfield.

Liverpool eventually ran out 6-0 victors thanks to further strikes from Joel Matip, Ki-Jana Hoever and Leighton Clarkson.

Liverpool reportedly lined up with Alisson in goal, with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and James Milner at the back.

Keita started in midfield alongside Jordan Henderson and Fabinho, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Mane and Minamino in attack.

The Japanese international arrived at the club in January from RB Salzburg but is yet to receive a run of games in the side.

That could now change and Klopp’s alleged line up against Blackburn would suggest he’s prepared to hand out more minutes to his fringe stars between now and the end of the season.

Jamie Carragher recently claimed that Klopp could use the remainder of the current campaign to prepare for next season.

“Listen, Liverpool have won the league,” he told Sky Sports.

“Gary just joked before about Liverpool losing every game; I honestly think Liverpool would still win the league as Manchester City would have to win all theirs.

“Jordan Henderson has come out plenty of times in interviews to say ‘it’s not won yet, it’s not won yet.’

“Players know they can’t say it publicly because there’s nothing worse than just saying it and coming across as confident and cocksure. You never take anything for granted.

“The position Liverpool are in, it’s just what game it happens in. I think the Liverpool players now, it’s just get it won as quickly as possible.

“It’s an interesting one from Liverpool’s point of view because if they do win the league in the first couple of games they are one of few teams who have nothing to play for, so it’s a case of how Jurgen Klopp approaches it.

“Will he use it as a preparation for next season to use his squad? There won’t be as much of a break. That will be interesting.”
