Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp can sign his own Beckham through unmissable bargain
Jurgen Klopp reviews Liverpool's 4-4 draw with Southampton
Liverpool have already signed Alexis Mac Allister, a player likened to Paul Scholes, and Jurgen Klopp could go one step further this summer by snapping up his very own David Beckham. He may do it on the cheap, too, as the stars align for the target in question – James Ward-Prowse – to leave Southampton for a palatable fee.
The Saints are poised to do their utmost to make sure that doesn’t happen. Reports indicate that they have slapped Ward-Prowse with an eye-watering £50million price tag after suffering relegation from the Premier League.
For a player not far short of his 29th birthday, and one that is virtually certain to move on rather than play in the Championship, it seems likely that Southampton will have to lower their asking price.
The Daily Mail claim that Liverpool are willing to be patient on that basis, with a speculative bid of £25m sure to represent excellent value for a player of Ward-Prowse’s quality if it proves successful.

Links between the Saints captain and Beckham are not difficult to fathom. Ward-Prowse is dynamite in dead-ball situations – much like the former Manchester United star – and the pair are a long way clear of the chasing pack in terms of all-time Premier League goals from free-kicks.
Beckham currently leads the way on 18, but Ward-Prowse is only one behind and he has plenty of years ahead of him to take the lead. The Saints academy product has racked up over 400 appearances for the club and made his debut as a teenager way back in 2011.

A cultured right foot and a penchant for a cross are not the only parallels to be drawn between Ward-Prowse and Beckham. The Liverpool target started his career on the wing before drifting into central midfield, much like Beckham did in the years before hanging up his boots.
Granted, Ward-Prowse’s transition occurred much earlier than his retired counterpart, and central midfield is where he would turn out for Liverpool if Klopp is able to lure him to Anfield.
Exactly who would get the nod to take set pieces remains to be seen, with Trent Alexander-Arnold similarly formidable on his right foot, although the Reds star has a long way to go before challenging Ward-Prowse’s free-kick tally.
A player with the Southampton ace’s top-flight experience, and indeed a right foot like Beckham’s, would surely be a valuable addition to Klopp’s squad once the Saints inevitably come down on their asking price later in the summer.
