Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp edging closer to impending Diogo Jota decision

Roberto Firmino may find himself on the bench in the next few games for Liverpool as Diogo Jota cranks up the pressure on Jurgen Klopp. The Portuguese has made a major impression since arriving for £40million from Wolves in September.

The signing of Jota was a bolt from the blue from Michael Edwards, who moved quickly to conclude the deal.

Following the arrival of Thiago Alcantara, it quickly emerged that the Reds had made contact with Wolves over the forward.

Less than 24 hours later, Jota was on Merseyside to complete his medical and sign a long-term contract.

Assistant manager Pepijn Lijnders made it clear that Jota was not there to make up the numbers ahead of his debut in the Carabao Cup at Lincoln.

He labelled the 23-year-old a “pressing monster” while Klopp also confused that Jota has been on his radar for several years.

It didn’t take long for him to find the net after coming off the bench on his Anfield debut against Arsenal to score in a 3-1 win.

His first start at Aston Villa was an evening to forget as the hosts ran out 7-2 winners in a bizarre contest.

But now Jota is looking to kick on for his new side and he made a huge statement over the course of the international break.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp can find Virgil van Dijk solution with unique formation change

What Virgil van Dijk has told Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp after injury diagnosis

Liverpool receive double injury boost after discovering Virgil van Dijk requires surgery

He hit an impressive double for Portugal against Sweden and single-handedly tore the Scandinavians to shreds.

It meant he returned to Melwood full of confidence and that was evident in Amsterdam against Ajax when he came off the bench for the final half an hour.

Jota looks most effective from the left when driving at defenders and opening space in the final third.

He’s an immediate goal threat and looks like he is playing to make a point. Roberto Firmino’s lack of form, unfortunately, sticks out like a sore thumb.

It seems just a matter of time before Jota is summoned to the starting line up in place of the Brazilian, who looks in need of a rest.

Firmino is yet to find the net this season and does not look his usual self but he is set to start this weekend against Sheffield United.

Despite that, with the games coming thick and fast, don’t be surprised to see Jota start on the left and Sadio Mane through the middle as a striker.

It’s a role the Senegal international has played before for the Reds on several occasions and it gives them an extra dimension in attack.

Jota’s progress is slowly but surely leaving Klopp with no choice but to hand him a start. It feels like that game could come next week, when the Reds host Midtjylland at Anfield.

An attacking headache is a problem Klopp will relish and it’s exactly why Liverpool decided to dip their hands into their pockets and get Jota on board as they eye more domestic and European success.
