Liverpool can repeat Klopp transfer success to solve two big issues

Klopp gives thoughts on Liverpool's midfield department

Liverpool head coach Jurgen Klopp has experienced such vast success in snatching promising players from Southampton over the years that the German may well return to the relegation-threatened club this summer to conduct more business. The German generally takes a backseat when it comes to negotiating transfers but, with two talents on his radar as part of his long-term upheaval at Anfield, he may be wise to move quickly in order to secure their signatures.

The Reds have often dipped into the Saints’ pool of talented players over the years, signing the likes of Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert and Dejan Lovren under Brendan Rodgers.

The Merseyside outfit later signed Sadio Mane and Virgil van Dijk for larger fees and it is fair to say the pair would rank high on the list of Klopp’s most successful acquisitions, with Southampton banking huge profits on the pair.

It could happen yet again this summer with Ruben Selles’ side in danger of dropping down to the Championship, with Klopp reportedly set to pounce on Romeo Lavia and Armel Bella-Kotchap should the South Coast club suffer relegation to the second tier.

James Ward-Prowse is likely to be the hot commodity amongst several Premier League clubs due to the England international’s incredible set-piece ability, but Klopp is thought to be keen on his midfield partner Lavia after an array of sublime displays.

The 19-year-old only signed from Manchester City last summer for £15m, but his performances have earned him admirers from across the top flight, including Chelsea and his former club City.

Big-spending Chelsea were even reported to have had a £50million bid rejected just months after he joined, and that shows just how highly Southampton value the youngster.

They could take a similar stance if offers come in for Bella-Kotchap, who has caught the eye with some commanding displays at the back before he suffered a serious injury.

After seemingly passing up the chance to join the bidding for Jude Bellingham this summer because of his £130m valuation, Klopp is in desperate need of some fresh energy and impetus in the engine room. Alexis Mac Allister would provide energy if, as reports suggest, the Argentine heads to Anfield this summer.

But a more natural No.6 is needed too. Lavia has proved to be a classy operator in the middle of the park as a box-to-box midfielder and may suit Liverpool’s high energy, pressing game.

Similarly, the physical presence of Bella-Kotchap at the back and his impressive range of passing means he could be a natural successor for Joel Matip, who has struggled with injuries and at 32 is not getting any younger.

Liverpool have had their defensive issues this season, but the young German would be a fine signing if the price is right.

If Southampton are relegated – which looks increasingly likely following their defeat against Nottingham Forest on Monday night – they may be forced to cash in their talented players.

And that would help Liverpool hugely in keeping their costs down to enable Klopp able to focus on other areas as he plots a major summer overhaul after a disappointing season.
