Liverpool want to be “careful” in their pursuit of Ibrahima Konate due to the Frenchman’s injury record, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano. Reports surfaced on Monday which claimed Liverpool are working on finalising the signing of Konate ahead of this summer’s transfer window. The Reds are in the market for a centre-back following the demolition of their defence due to injuries this season.

Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez have missed the majority of the campaign due to serious knee problems.

Joel Matip has also been ruled out for the remainder of the season following the ankle injury he suffered in January.

Liverpool brought in Ozan Kabak and Ben Davies on the winter transfer deadline day.

But Jurgen Klopp clearly wants to add more depth at the back by bringing in RB Leipzig star Konate.

Romano says talks are ongoing with the player but a deal is yet to be struck.

“They’re in talks with the agent, they are trying to understand if they can sign the player,” Romano told talkSPORT.

“The deal is not done, it’s not signed yet. They’re in talks with the player about the contract and everything, because we know that they have a release clause with Leipzig and Leipzig want €40million or nothing to sell the player.

“So it’s not done at the moment, they’re just waiting and talking with the player.

“He’s one of the targets on the list, they want a new centre-back in the summer but for sure it’s not yet a done deal.”

Konate has a poor injury record despite not turning 22 until May.

He missed over six months of action between October 2019 and May 2020 due to a torn muscle.

The centre-back was also absent for nine matches this season due to an ankle problem.

And Romano says Liverpool are remaining cautious over completing a deal.

He added: “So negotiations are on with the player, he’s asking for a five-year contract, the only issue could be about injuries and we know how it is for Liverpool in this moment. So they want to be careful, but let’s see.

“If they find an agreement on the personal terms, if they want to pay the release clause of €40m or nothing, because Leipzig don’t want to negotiate about the price of Ibrahima Konate.”
