Liverpool confirm Thiago Alcantara transfer as Jurgen Klopp secures second summer deal

Liverpool have announced the signing of Thiago Alcantara on a four-year contract from Bayern Munich. The midfielder has been linked with a move to Anfield all summer long with personal terms seemingly not being an issue.

Bayern Munich had been holding out for £27million, but they’ve now accepted a deal with Liverpool paying just £5m up front with a guaranteed £15m to paid over the course of his contract and £5m in potential add-ons.

He becomes Liverpool’s second signing this window after the club brought in Kostas Tsimikas earlier this summer.

Before the announcement today, Klopp said at his press conference ahead of the Chelsea game: “It’s just about timing.

“Sometimes you buy before you sell, sometimes you sell before you buy.

“Sometimes different scenarios. Sometimes you don’t buy now but you buy later and sometimes you earn the money back in different ways.

“The only thing which is always true with us is what we earned on football, we spend on football. That is the short summary of the philosophy of the club. One of the key points.

“We cannot just say ‘This year we need this and that, and we cannot afford it’ – and I wouldn’t insist on it. But this season we worked constantly on improvement.

“Sometimes people like it, sometimes they like it later.”

Klopp has also refused to rule out further additions or departures after Thiago’s arrival.

He said earlier: “The window itself leaves the window open. It is open until October 6, so that is normal and was always the same.

“I cannot promise we will do something and I wouldn’t but I cannot say it is 100 per cent sure we don’t do anything.

“It’s the situation, it is developing a situation so anything could happen.

“If a player comes to me and asks me ‘Boss I want to go’ – I don’t expect that but it can happen – then we have to react.”

Liverpool will now turn their attention to signing another forward having missed out on top target Timo Werner earlier in the year.

Ismaila Sarr has been touted as their preferred alternative for several weeks.

But Watford have reportedly set an asking price at £50million, forcing Liverpool to look at alternatives.

And on Friday it emerged that Liverpool had now made Wolves star Diogo Jota their next target.
