Liverpool ‘eye Ibrahim Sangare’ as Man Utd icon predicts greatness

Klopp gives verdict on Liverpool's win at West Ham

Liverpool are reportedly eyeing up PSV Eindhoven midfielder Ibrahim Sangare as part of Jurgen Klopp’s summer revamp. The Ivory Coast international once drew comparisons to Chelsea legend Michael Essien, while ex-Manchester United forward Ruud van Nistelrooy has tipped him to go to the very top.

PSV and Ajax both look set to miss out on the Eredivisie title this campaign, with Feyenoord eight points clear and in sparkling form. Their showdown on Sunday was still billed as a must-watch, however, and Van Nistelrooy’s Eindhoven side came away with a resounding 3-0 win.

Sangare played every minute at the base of midfield, and 90min claim that Liverpool were among the clubs in attendance. Man Utd and Arsenal also sent scouts as team-mate Jurrien Timber continues to attract the interest of top sides.

With a £33million release clause, Sangare could be an enticing option for the Reds as they look to bring in multiple midfielders this summer, having pulled out of the race to sign Jude Bellingham.

The player is said to be keen to test himself at a higher level after rising through the ranks at Toulouse and signing for PSV in 2020. The 6ft 3in star has scored four goals and notched one assist in the league alone this season.

“Obviously he can handle [the Premier League],” explained Van Nistelrooy back in March. “I have challenged him because I think Ibrahim can go to the top in England.

“He would also be great in Italy or Spain. I see players in his position there now and I think Ibrahim is definitely going to take a shot at that level.”

While Sangare was making a name for himself in Ligue 1 back in 2016, African journalist Alpha Balde claimed that the midfielder was physically reminiscent of Manchester City hero Yaya Toure, but his playing style reminded him of Essien. “They had the same physical strength at an equal age,” he added.

Sangare is said to be interested in a move to the Premier League and his representatives have supposedly pre-warned a number of clubs in the English top-flight that a transfer race could be on this summer.

The Ivorian is just one name on a growing shortlist of midfield targets at Anfield, with Chelsea star Mason Mount, Inter Milan ace Nicolo Barella and Brighton’s Alexis Mac Allister also rumoured to be of interest.
