Liverpool supporters were left delighted and pleasantly shocked by Joel Matip’s stunning goal in his side’s comprehensive victory against Leeds tonight.

The centre back got on the score sheet in surprising fashion at Anfield, having combined with Mohamed Salah before marauding forward and dinking into the net.

His team-mates looked equally as stunned during the celebrations, and social media users unsurprisingly went wild following Matip’s special effort.

Talisman Salah fired the hosts into the lead to ensure they remained on the coattails of Manchester City, before Matip scored after an incisive move.

Luis Diaz linked up with Matip, who picked up the ball inside the centre circle, just inside his own half.

He then brought play forward and picked out Salah, who in turn teed him up.

Matip was an unlikely scorer at Anfield, having lifted a delicate finish beyond Illan Meslier

From there, he made no mistake when bearing down on Illan Meslier, having lifted the ball up and over the goalkeeper. 

‘Matip making them No 9 runs,’ one gobsmacked fan said.

‘Gotta admit that Joel Matip goal was the best thing to happen in a long time!’ a second wrote. ‘Enjoyed it the most!’

A third added: ‘It’s absolutely time Matip got rewarded for his runs. Finish was clinical and better than that of a striker.’

‘Matip has no right scoring that,’ a fourth said, accompanied by a laughing emoji.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have moved three points behind leaders City with the victory.
