Thiago has confirmed that he has contracted Covid-19 and is currently self-isolating for a period of 10 days.
The Liverpool star missed Monday’s win over Arsenal with a mystery problem, with boss Jurgen Klopp only confirming that he would not be available for the Reds until after the international break.
But now it has emerged that the Spain international midfielder was diagnosed with the coronavirus, after two separate tests detected the condition in samples.
The test was carried out at the end of last week, and the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich player immediately went into quarantine to ensure the virus did not spread through the Liverpool squad.
He will now be sidelined for another week, and that means he looks certain to miss the club’s visit to Aston Villa on Aston Villa on October 4, which comes right at the end of his isolation period.
He is also sidelined for the EFL Cup game against Arsenal this Thursday.
It is the second case to have hit the Anfield club this summer, with an unnamed player missing the pre-season trip to Austria with the virus.
Liverpool had maintained a silence over the cases at the club, because they are bound by medical confidentiality, but Thiago himself wanted the news to be released, to explain his absence from international duty.
He has been forced to isolate on Merseyside, and will not be able to leave him home until after next weekend.
That though, the midfielder should be able to return at the beginning of next week, which could allow him to return to play for Spain in a game against Portugal October 7, though his national side may decide not to take any risk given the game is a friendly.
Klopp has explained that the player would be back after the international break, and that means he is likely to make a dramatic return for the Reds in what is likely to be an explosive Merseyside derby, in a top of the table clash against Everton on October 17.
The club’s medics have revealed that Thaigo exhibited only mild symptoms of the virus, and is in good health and getting better.
LFC first-team doctor, Dr Jim Moxon, said: “It is the choice of each individual whether they reveal publicly the outcome of a COVID-19 test.
“We have followed all the protocols to the letter and Thiago is OK.
"He will be self-isolating now as per the guidelines and hopefully he’ll be back with us soon.”
