Liverpool step up interest in Barella and Berardi, new contract ‘really close’

International tournaments have a habit of inspiring clubs to pursue certain talents, and Euro 2020 is proving no different as Italy’s champions are among the latest to be linked with Liverpool.

Many at Anfield are intrigued as to how the Reds plan on replacing Georginio Wijnaldum following his summer transfer to Paris Saint-Germain, and Inter Milan’s Nicolo Barella has emerged as an option.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have been heavily linked with Barella of late, but rumours of a switch have intensified once more following reports the Reds could tempt Inter with a €70million (£60m) bid.

He isn’t the only Azzurri star associated with the Mersyside outfit, either, as Sassuolo’s Domenico Berardi has emerged as a cut-price alternative to Juventus forward Federico Chiesa.

Daily Star Sport delves into those potential new arrivals at Liverpool, as well as the latest claims that Alisson is “really, really close” to penning a new contract with the club.

Liverpool consider £60m Barella bid

Within days of ending Italy’s 53-year wait for a second European Championship, box-to-box marvel Barella has been the subject of fresh reports suggesting Liverpool want his signature.

The 24-year-old scored one goal, recorded two assists and was generally one of Italy’s most impressive players at Euro 2020, leading to new questions regarding his future in Milan.

And Liverpool are seemingly one such party who feel they might have a chance at his signature, with word the Merseysiders could be ready to offer €70m (£60m) in order to get it.

FCInterNews relayed information coming from La Repubblica, which added Liverpool could have the financial clout to at least make the Nerazzurri consider selling their star.

Simone Inzaghi would be aggrieved to lose such a valued member of his squad, particularly after he was allegedly assured there would be no more major departures following Achraf Hakimi’s move to PSG.

Barella missed only two league games for Inter as they strode to the Serie A title last season (one due to suspension), cementing his spot as a vital member of the XI in his second term at the San Siro.

Klopp has lost a prominent member of his team in Wijnaldum, who made 51 appearances last season, but former Cagliari talisman Barella could make for a fine successor.

Klopp eyes Berardi as back-up

Speaking of Serie A talents who impressed during Italy’s run to the Euro 2020 crown, Sassuolo star Berardi is another who has his admirers at Anfield.

Klopp’s side are reportedly keeping tabs on Juventus winger Chiesa, but in the likely event he’s deemed too expensive, 26-year-old Berardi could be seen as a more cost-effective fall-back option.

Corriere della Serra reported Liverpool will challenge AC Milan to sign the forward, although it’s understood they’ll still have to fork out €50m (£42.7m) if they’re to land him.

That’s roughly the same figure Liverpool paid to sign Diogo Jota from Wolves last year, with the Portuguese proving himself a capable back-up to Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.

Berardi’s price inflated from €30m (£25.6m) prior to Euro 2020, with his dazzling displays at the tournament having convinced the Neroverdi they can charge more for his departure.

The 17-cap Italy international has scored 105 goals in 291 appearances for Sassuolo, including a return of 17 goals in 30 Serie A outings last season.

Berardi told Gazzetta dello Sport in a 2019 interview that his preferred destination would be Liverpool if he were to leave his club of 11 years.

Few can argue Alisson’s first three seasons at Liverpool haven’t been a major success, and the club are on the cusp of rewarding their No. 1 with a new contract.

Despite the fact Alisson, 28, has another three years remaining on his current deal, the Reds will put any notion of an exit beyond doubt by extending his deal beyond 2024.

That’s according to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, who said on Tuesday’s Here We Go podcast that the two parties will prolong Alisson’s stay, even if it’s not imminent.

“So Alisson is getting closer to signing a new contract with Liverpool. It will take some weeks, maybe months because of course with the timing for these kinds of things. But Alisson is getting really, really close to signing a contract with Liverpool,” Romano said.

Alisson won the Champions League in his first season in England and followed that up with a Premier League title in 2020, with the club clearly content having him guard their goal.
