Tottenham v Liverpool: Premier League preview
Jurgen Klopp is expected to recall Joel Matip and Jordan Henderson when his side travel to north London to take on Tottenham. The Reds have a chance to turn their recent misfortune around by making a statement against Jose Mourinho’s side.
The Reds have now taken just 10 points from their past eight league matches and were beaten in the FA Cup at Manchester United last weekend.
Yet still, Liverpool are refusing to lie down in the title race and with Diogo Jota expected to return in a matter of weeks, the champions are keen to get back on track.
Beating Tottenham would be the perfect way to kickstart a revival and Liverpool have failed to score in their past four league matches.
Klopp has been boosted by the welcome return of Matip and Henderson in training and both could return to the starting XI at Spurs.
Both will continue to be assessed in the lead up to the game.
He said on Wednesday: “No new cases [injuries] and Hendo and Joel trained yesterday with the team fully.
“Like always with these things we have to see how they react overnight and what they can do today, but they trained yesterday.”
Matip is expected to partner Fabinho at centre-back, as Rhys Williams drops out.
The youngster endured a tough evening last Sunday at Old Trafford after making a costly error for United’s second goal through Marcus Rashford.
Henderson should start in midfield once again following a stint at centre-back, joining Thiago Alcantara and Gini Wijnaldum in the engine room.
Up top, Sadio Mane comes back into the team after starting on the bench in the defeat at Manchester United.
Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah showed signs of being back to their old selves in the 3-2 defeat at Old Trafford.
The Egyptian found the net twice while Firmino’s relentless pressing and eye for a pass stood out for the visitors.
Meanwhile, Jota is slowly closing in on a return to action having been absent since early December.
The Portuguese is still wearing a knee brace while away from Melwood to support his injury.
He is expected to give Liverpool a boost ahead of their Champions League last 16 clash with RB Leipzig.
Expected Liverpool XI (4-3-3) vs Tottenham: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson; Thiago, Henderson, Wijnaldum; Salah, Mane Firmino.
