Liverpool tipped to emulate Ferdinand and Vidic partnership with Mane’s help

Former Liverpool striker Stan Collymore believes the Reds will have a centre-back pairing which can rival legendary Manchester United duo Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic if they can sign Kalidou Koulibaly this summer.

It emerged earlier this month that Liverpool forward Sadio Mane has been trying to convince his close friend and compatriot to make the move to Anfield.

Should Liverpool be successful in convincing Koulibaly to join then Collymore believes he will form one of "the best partnerships there have ever been in the game" with Virgil van Dijk.

Speaking to The People, Collymore said: "The idea of Kalidou Koulibaly partnering Virgil van Dijk in Liverpool’s central defence has me so excited that I reckon it could be the best pairing since Manchester United’s Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.

"It genuinely could be up there with the best partnerships there have ever been in the game and if Sadio Mane’s text messages to his compatriot have convinced him to sign for the Reds, then it’s game over for all their title rivals."

Liverpool sold centre-back Dejan Lovren to Zenit Saint Petersburg earlier this summer for a fee of almost £11m and they have not replaced him.

Joe Gomez and Joel Matip have had recurring injury problems during their time at the club and, with Lovren now gone, midfielder Fabinho was forced to deputise at the back in Liverpool's 2-0 win over Chelsea.

Although the Brazilian impressed alongside Van Dijk and Gomez has since returned to full fitness, concerns still remain about the Reds' depth at the back.

However, Klopp has claimed Liverpool will not look to "solve that in the transfer market."

Klopp said: "The centre-half situation, you think you are covered with three absolute top, top, top centre-halves, young players behind and Fabinho if we need him.

"And then all of a sudden, three players are injured and are out for a few days. That’s not nice, but we cannot solve that in the transfer market. It’s just not possible, and we will not try.

"If nothing more serious happens, then we will not even try. If the situation stays like it is in the moment, then no, there will be nothing happening."
