Liverpool transfer hopes dashed as Mane signing ruled out due to five players

Liverpool will not be re-signing Sadio Mane this summer as Jurgen Klopp is already well-stocked in attacking areas, claims Danny Murphy. The former Reds midfielder believes supporters would love to see the Senegal star return to Anfield but he cannot see it happening.

Mane is set to be allowed to quit Bayern Munich after just one season. He has not lived up to expectations since leaving Liverpool last summer.

The 31-year-old has made 37 appearances for Bayern in all competitions, scoring 12 goals and registering six assists. But he has been unable to fill the huge void left by Robert Lewandowski at the Allianz Arena.

Mane also had a falling out with team-mate Leroy Sane, punching him after the Champions League quarter-final first-leg defeat to Manchester City. Bayern chiefs have had enough and are keen on selling him in the summer window.

Liverpool are one of the clubs linked with his signature. But, even with Roberto Firmino leaving, Jurgen Klopp already has five frontline attacking options.

Cody Gakpo joined in January to add to the quartet of Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota. Murphy says Liverpool’s summer budget should be saved for other positions.

He said on talkSPORT: “I think the fans would [take Mane], but you would have to get rid of someone. They have five forwards, or six even, and that is a huge chunk of their budget on a player and position they don’t need.

“They need midfielders. So I can’t see it.”

Murphy does not think Mane is completely at fault for how his season at Bayern has panned out. He claims the Bundesliga giants were wrong to expect the winger to play out of position and cover for the loss of Lewandowski.

He added: “Munich have created their own problems with this one a little bit. There’s not going to be many takers that is going to pay him [his current salary] at 31.

“Furthermore they’ve played him down the middle when he’s played the majority of his years at Anfield, scoring goals and being phenomenal, off the left-hand side which is where he’s most comfortable, although he played through the middle a few times near the end of his career at Liverpool to fill a gap.

“Munich have brought him in to try and replace Lewandowski, who’s an out-and-out No 9, scores God knows how many goals, and they then wonder why Mane’s not been at his best.”
