Liverpool legend Steve Nicol believes the Reds should only attempt to sign Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly if the Serie A side lower their asking price.
Liverpool are among a host of top European sides who have been linked with the centre-back this summer and there have been suggestions that they should look to bring in a new defender.
Dejan Lovren has departed the club, while Joe Gomez and Joel Matip have struggled with injuries over the years and Koulibaly could be brought in to partner Virgil van Dijk.
Speaking on ESPN FC about the potential signing, Nicol said: "If the money is right [signing Koulibaly is a no-brainer]. But clearly, they’re asking for silly money.
"The chairman at Napoli is well known for being tough to deal with. If it’s silly money it won’t happen, but I’d like to see it happen.
"The guy is absolutely in the prime of his career, he’s a great centre-back. Any team on the planet would like to have this guy, but it depends on the money.
"I think Napoli will be asking for too much money, so I don’t think it’ll happen. But it would be nice if it did."
Liverpool and Chelsea transfer plans could be affected by Lautaro Martinez to Barcelona
Nicol also labelled the centre-back the final area Liverpool need to strengthen after bringing in midfielder Thiago Alcantara and forward Diogo Jota.
He added: "The only real question mark is at centre-back. Joe Gomez hasn’t started the season paticularly well, Van Dijk didn’t start the season particularly well.
"If there’s a wishlist, it would be another Van Dijk-esque type player, a dominant centre-back who can play but is hard-nosed as well. That would be the wishlist, but to be honest, we shouldn’t complain, Liverpool are not in a bad position."

However, fellow Reds legend John Aldridge believes the club do not need to sign a centre-back because of Fabinho's adaptability.
Writing in his column for the Irish Independent, Aldridge said: "Fabinho was outstanding at the heart of the defence and so long as he is happy to play in a centre-back position, he looks to have the potential to become Virgil van Dijk’s first choice partner.
"It looks like Fabinho will save the club £30m this summer as they would have spent that and more trying to find a central defender to turn in a performance of that class against a top-quality opponent and it removes one big issue for Klopp and the club."
