Liverpool’s new signing Ibrahima Konate has told Reds fans what they can expect from him next season, after he completed his £35million move from RB Leipzig earlier this summer. The Premier League side exercised his release clause and the centre-back has now joined up with Jurgen Klopp’s side, as they look to win back the Premier League title.

Liverpool desperately needed defensive reinforcements, after their title defence was unsuccessful due to an injury crisis at the back.

Virgil van Dijk was ruled out for the season in October after he ruptured his ACL in the Merseyside derby.

Joel Matip and Joe Gomez also had spells on the sidelines with injuries.

But Konate, who will likely partner Van Dijk next season, has revealed what sort of defender he is, ahead of making his debut for the Reds.

“I am big, I am strong and I am not scared with the ball,” he said in an interview on Liverpool’s website.

“I can score more with my foot than my head, it is a little bit strange! This is me!

“Yes, I have this quality, but I have to work again and again and more and more and more for being a very good defender.

“I have watched some Premier League games and everybody knows there is so much intensity, strong players. This is difficult but I [will] love the challenge.”

Klopp has also talked about what sort of player Konate is, adding that he is pleased to add him to his squad after the injury issues his squad suffered last term.

“After the problems we had with injuries in the centre-half position last season, there’s no doubt it was clear it was an area of the team we needed to strengthen,” Klopp said after signing the defender.

“In Ibrahima, we are signing a player who will add to the quality we already have here. His physical attributes are very impressive.

“He is quick, he is very strong and he is dominant in the air.

“He comes to us after playing more than 90 times for Leipzig in the Bundesliga and European football.

“He also played for a team in the Champions League in high-pressure matches, who have a similar football vision to ourselves.

“I am confident we are signing a player who can play for us right away, but he is a boy of 22 years of age who has room to improve because of his massive potential.

“I know that’s something he is eager to work on with us to become an even better player.

“For me, that’s really exciting because I have seen how good he is already and I’m looking forward to working with him when he joins up with us in pre-season.”
