Liverpool’s Jota makes "big influence" statement as he delivers injury update

Diogo Jota will not rush his return as he recovers from a knee injury but has big ambitions for when he returns.

The Liverpool forward was injured in the game with Midtjylland in early December to further add to Jurgen Klopp's woes.

Prior to that though he had wasted no time in proving his worth following his £40m move from Wolves in the summer.

Jota scored in each of his first four league games at Anfield – a club record.

He also bagged a hat-trick in the Champions League to take his season tally to nine in 17 outings.

His form even saw Klopp reshuffle his attack to accommodate Jota alongside the usual front three.

The 24-year-old though wants more and is targeting a big role with the Reds.

He said in Liverpool’s  official matchday programme : “Knee injuries are always complicated so we cannot rush things, but I am doing well and I will be back on the field as soon as possible.

“When I'm fit I know I'll give my best in each training session to give myself a chance of playing.

“In  Portugal  they used to say the hardest thing is not to arrive but to stay there. So that of course is my target.

“Now that I have achieved a move to Liverpool I want to be a big influence in this club and that's what I try to do every day.

“When I first came my target was to get into the team and to know what we have to do on the field.

“After that the aim is to give your best and take advantage of the opportunities you might have and that's all I always try to do.”

A permanent role for Jota may force Klopp to make long-term changes to the attack.

The Liverpool boss though has had to deal with speculation linking Mohamed Salah with a move away from Anfield after he opened the door to a Spanish switch.
