Luis Rubiales resigns as Spanish president in bombshell Piers Morgan interview

‘This is unacceptable’ – Alexia Putellas after Luis Rubiales refuses to resign

Luis Rubiales has confirmed his intention to resign as Spanish FA president after kissing Spain forward Jenni Hermoso without consent. The 46-year-old appeared on Piers Morgan Uncensored on Sunday evening to sensationally announce he was walking away from the role amid the scandal.

Rubiales’ behaviour during the trophy ceremony has overshadowed Spain’s historic 2023 Women’s World Cup win.

The Spanish players were jubilant after beating England in the Sydney final, but Hermoso was caught by surprise when Rubiales held her head and kissed her on the lips on the ceremony stage.

He faced scathing criticism for his actions after Hermoso admitted she didn’t like it in a post-match interview, and the situation has intensified in recent days.

The 33-year-old – Barcelona and Spain’s all-time top goalscorer – has presented a sexual assault complaint against Rubiales to the Spanish prosecutors’ office.

He is expected to soon become under criminal investigation by a Spanish court after Hermoso lodged the complaint in person at the State Attorney General’s Office.

And speaking to Morgan, Rubiales claimed that he had decided to resign after holding conversations with his father and daughters.

“I love my daughters so much, and they love me so, so much. I’m very proud of them. They are very close to me,” Rubiales said.

He added: “I am going to [resign] – of course, I cannot continue my work. They know it’s not a question about me.

“Some friends very close to me said, ‘Luis, now you have to focus on your dignity and continue your life – if not, you are probably going to damage people you love and the sport you love’.”

If criminal proceedings commence, a judge at Spain’s Audiencia Nacional court in Madrid will conduct an investigation into whether Rubiales should be charged before inviting prosecutors to indict him.

FIFA had provisionally suspended Rubiales from all football-related activity. He was also banned from contacting Hermoso and those close to her while being investigated.

His decision will come as a relief for the Spanish women’s football team, who vowed to go on strike until he had been removed from his post.

It comes four days after the Spanish Football Federation sacked manager Jorge Vilda just two weeks after he guided the nation to their first Women’s World Cup.

Vilda’s coaching staff resigned in protest against Rubiales after he initially refused to step down despite landing in further hot water for handling other players and grabbing his own crotch in celebration.
